Playing The Game of Baccarat

The game of baccarat is believed to have traced its origin from an early version of the game which used Tarot cards during the Middle Ages sometime during the 1480's. The name baccarat comes from the Italian word which means zero referring to the values given to the face cards and tens card.

The nobility of the French began to play the game by the 1950s but sooner or later it emerged into the game being played today. Baccarat is probably one of the most prominent games played in casinos to this day.

The goal of each player is to accumulate a hand consisting of two or three cards with a value closest to nine as possible. A hand that equals nine in the initial two cards is a perfect hand. A hand totaling eight therefore is regarded as the second-best hand. A hand with an eight or a nine is referred to as a "natural" hand. A natural nine is the only hand that beats the natural eight. If the Bank or any other player possesses a natural eight or nine, the other players will not be allowed to draw a third card. In case a tie ensues, bets are suspended.

An ace is equivalent to one, picture cards count as 10 and the other cards their corresponding values. The first figure is ignored when a hand reaches double figures hence a card with a total of 18 counts as an eight.

The participant who has the most money is appointed as the banker. Three hands consisting of two cards each is dealt by the banker. Two players, one on the right and another on the left, are given their hands. Other players have the option to bet on either hands or both in order to beat the hand of the banker. When any player calls out "banco," they are putting their wager on the bank's funds and the other bets are withdrawn.

If no player has a total less than eight or nine, he should shout "non" to stand or he may say "carte" to get an additional card facing up. A player is only required to call stand when he gets a six or seven and he must draw when he gets a four or less. Casinos receive a percentage of the bank and their bets as game fee.

Two hands are played in baccarat - the "player" and the "banker". Betting can be done on either one. If the hand wins, you receive equal money (1:1) as payoff. You can also make another bet and that is the tie bet which gives an 8:1 payoff. However, this only happens in one of out ten hands.

At the onset, two hands are received. Additional cards can be given if possible based on the rules.
